Greece in USA is a non-profit organization with a global reach that promotes knowledge of contemporary and ancient Greek Culture while fostering international cultural cooperation, experimentation and social engagement. The organization's extensive programming includes commissioned artists' and curators' projects, residencies, educational and ecological initiatives and the commitment to cultivating a sensible culture of innovation and thought leadership.
We are dedicated to offering innovative and unique programs in education and the arts, all exploring the evolving diversity and richness of Greek and Cypriot cultures. The non- profit organization seeks to generate new thinking about the arts and promote cross- cultural dialogue through partnerships and new platforms of creation.
The organization promotes international exchange of practice and knowledge in the arts - visual and sound art, dance, architecture, theatre - research on the methods used in curatorial and performing practices and investigation of points of intersection between the arts, science and the public sphere by means of interventions, collective actions, educational programs and publications.
Greece in USA aims to collaborate and build long-lasting partnerships with leading institutions and individuals who actively engage with Greece and its culture and to convey a comprehensive and distinctive representation of Greece and Cyprus by producing cultural and educational programs that encourage intercultural dialogue and enable cultural involvement.

Georgia Kotretsos, is a visual artist, researched and founder/publisher of THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, Arts & Culture Research Lab Observatorium.
Cameron Bell is the Director of Civic Engagement at Hellenic American University. He is also an independent risk consultant and research fellow at the Institute for International Relations (IDIS), Athens, Greece.
Dr Marianna Tsionki is an art theorist and curator working at the intersection of contemporary art, ecology and technology. She is Associate Professor and University Curator at Leeds Arts University.
Maja Ćirić is an independent curator and art critic. After the digital turn in 2020, she became more involved in phygital (physical + digital) projects, conferences and exhibitions in the hybrid field of art + science + tech. She also curates in the metaverse.
Marita Pappa is a Greek interdisciplinary artist and researcher exploring the relationship between the body, time and public space as well as reflect on conditions of rupture and survival.
The Provinces' vision is to provide a space for the ongoing redefinition through photography of the term "provinces" - "provincial", providing the basis for a dialogue between the centre and the periphery that is free of stereotypical prejudices.
Eleni Mouzakiti is a visual artist, educator for Art Photography Practice, and curator of photographic exhibitions and publications. She studied German Language and Literature at the University of Athens, FU Berlin and Ruprecht-Karl University of Heidelberg.
Kostas Ioannidis is Associate Professor of Theory and Criticism at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His essays have appeared in numerous scholarly volumes and journals.

Αfter two and a half years of preparation, THE TEΛOS SOCIETY proudly announces the completion of the “ΚΕΛΛΑΡΙ 10 | CELLAR 10” production, a middle-length documentary that honors the history and heritage of ACHAIA CLAUSS chateau’s modern winemaking in Greece, featuring Periklis Baltas, the Vice President of ACHAIA CLAUSS Winery and the oenologist of ACHAIA CLAUSS, Sotiris Karagiannis.
The modern history of Greek wine begins in 1861, when Gustav Clauss acquired 60 acres of land in Riganokampos, near Patras, and established the renowned Gutland. Over the next 120 years, Greece faced wars, occupations, waves of displacement, and severe poverty. To this day,
the ACHAIA CLAUSS chateau remains an active beacon of the art of winemaking.
For the first time, the lens of THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY production brings to light the legendary Cellar 10, Cellar 9, the barrel cellar, the underground wine aging cellar, the Mavrodaphne
vineyard, the ACHAIA CLAUSS museum, the Catholic chapel of Saint Anna, and the burial site of Gustav Clauss. The documentary focuses on and acknowledges the contribution of Pericles Baltas in preserving and highlighting the cultural heritage of modern winemaking in Greece as it evolved after the Ottoman era. While celebrating the 40th anniversary of his dedication to ACHAIA CLAUSS, the narrative “ΚΕΛΛΑΡΙ 10 | CELLAR 10” is framed through the perspective of Gutland, situated in the treasure trove of modern Greek winemaking, "Cellar 10" of ACHAIA CLAUSS in Riganokampos, Patras—home to the first Mavrodaphne barrel with a capacity of 4,140 liters, dated back to 1873.
The first screening of the film will take place in the spring of 2025 at the historic premises of ACHAIA CLAUSS chateau which combines the magic of Greek wine with history and tradition.
The documentary covers:

The journey and winemaking of ACHAIA CLAUSS since its founding in 1861.

The traditional techniques and tools used for the harvest, their role in shaping Greek winemaking and the beginning of wine tourism.

The oral history of ACHAIA CLAUSS, as reflected through the personal testimonies of Mr. Periklis Baltas, who has dedicated his life since 1985 to preserving and promoting the history and archive of the company.
In 1937[1], Mavrodaphne of Patras was recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product. This red wine (vin de liqueur) is produced from the grape varieties Mavrodaphne (at least 51%) and Black Corinthian. In 2023, an application was submitted to include sweet Mavrodaphne in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The name "Mavrodaphne" is tied to a tender yet melancholic story about a young woman named Daphne, who lived at the ACHAIA CLAUSS estate. Daphne, with her dark hair and eyes, passed away at a very young age, leaving her name to forever mark this unique wine.
In 2019, the Ministry of Culture announced the designation of 119 items from the Industrial Complex of ACHAIA CLAUSS Winery in Petroto, Patras, as movable monuments under Article 20, paragraphs 1d and 1e of Law 3028/2002, due to their exceptional importance for the history of the production process, as well as the economic and social role of one of Greece’s oldest and most significant wineries.
“ΚΕΛΛΑΡΙ 10 | CELLAR 10” is not merely an exploration of the past but also a bridge connecting the rich history of Greek winemaking with its promising future. Cellar No. 10, one of the oldest structures of ACHAIA CLAUSS, is located near the center of the estate. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that some of the barrels it houses, filled with tradition and aged Mavrodaphne wine, are dedicated by Gustav Clauss and his successors to prominent figures from ecclesiastical, political, artistic, athletic, and intellectual world who have visited the winery. This tradition, which continues to this day, began with the visit of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary to Gutland in 1885. In her honor, Gustav Clauss named this cellar the “Imperial Cellar.” Imbued with the aura of the Empress’s presence, the “Imperial Cellar” houses a total of 89 barrels of Mavrodaphne, 30 of which are dedicatory, and 4 feature engraved relief depictions inspired by Greek mythology.
Periklis Baltas was born in Patras in 1953, a city that, since the 19th century, has been a cultural and multi-cultural community due to its connection with raisin production and its port, while also possessing a rich urban culture. He grew up in Patras until 1970, when he moved to Athens to attend the University of Piraeus, where he studied economics. There, he gained a broad range of knowledge in areas such as economics, trade, law, and management.
From 1980 to 1985, he worked for the Latsis Group. In June 1985, he returned to Patras, where he began his collaboration with ACHAIA CLAUSS. This partnership introduced him to the culture, tradition, and art of wine. It allowed him to meet the people of the vineyard and interact with wine experts who taught him that "in poetry and wine, you cannot lie, and quality is not imposed, but humbly presented."
Since 2015, he has passed the torch to the younger generation, and his current focus is to highlight the history and archival wealth of ACHAIA CLAUSS, which marks the beginning of Greek winemaking.
The head oenologist of ACHAIA CLAUSS, Sotiris Karagiannis, also participates in the narration and documentation, discussing two art forms – the one of winemaking and barrel-making in Greece, and the long history of the ACHAIA CLAUSS chateau in Petrota, Patras.

Τα Χριστούγεννα είναι μια εποχή που αναδεικνύει τις αξίες της προσφοράς, της αγάπης και της αλληλεγγύης, ενώνοντας ανθρώπους και γεφυρώνοντας αποστάσεις. Με αυτό το πνεύμα, η THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY βρέθηκε εκεί όπου χτυπά πιο δυνατά η καρδιά της, στο Καστελλόριζο, στο νηπιαγωγείο και το δημοτικό σχολείο του νησιού με τη συγγραφέα, και δημιουργό πίσω από μία Καστελλοριζιά ιστορία φιλίας.
Με ιδιαίτερη συγκίνηση και επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα 16 Δεκεμβρίου 2024 η παρουσίαση του παιδικού βιβλίου ΤΟ ΚΑΣΤΕΛΛΟΡΙΖΟ ΒΟΤΣΑΛΟΚΟΧΥΛΑΚΙ της συγγραφέως Γεωργίας Κακούρου Χρόνη, πρώην επιμελήτριας της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης, με εικονογράφηση του Στέφανου Κολτσιδόπουλου και εκδόσεις ΤΗΕ ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY. Η εκδήλωση συνδιοργανώθηκε σε συνεργασία με τον Στράτο Αμύγδαλο, Πολιτιστικό Αντιδήμαρχο Δήμου Μεγίστης, την ενεργή συμμετοχή των εκπαιδευτικών και μαθητών του Νηπιαγωγείου και Δημοτικού Σχολείου Μεγίστης και τον εκδότρια, Γεωργία Κοτρέτσος.
Η ΤΤS δώρισε το βιβλίο πριν τις διακοπές των Χριστουγέννων στα παιδιά, προσφέροντας ένα ενθύμιο που συνδυάζει λογοτεχνία και τέχνη, ενώ ταυτόχρονα ενισχύει τη σύνδεσή τους με την πολιτιστική και φυσική κληρονομιά του νησιού τους.

Η ιστορία «ΤΟ ΚΑΣΤΕΛΛΟΡΙΖΟ ΒΟΤΣΑΛΟΚΟΧΥΛΑΚΙ» της Γεωργίας Κακούρου-Χρόνη ταξίδεψε τα παιδιά του Νηπιαγωγείου και του Δημοτικού σχολείου του Καστελλόριζου σε έναν κόσμο γεμάτο θάλασσα, ουρανό και τη μαγεία της φύσης, μέσα από τη ματιά ενός μικρού βότσαλου και ενός κοχυλιού. Τα παιδιά ερμήνευσαν και εμπλούτισαν την ιστορία μέσα από ένα παιχνίδι νοητής πλοήγησης και αναγνώρισαν στις σελίδες του βιβλίου τα μήκη και πλάτη του τόπου τους, τις γειρλίες και τον θαυμαστό κόσμο της θάλασσας. Στην ακροθαλασσιά του Καστελλόριζου, το βοτσαλάκι ονειρεύτηκε περιπέτειες πέρα από τον αφρό της θάλασσας, ενώ το κοχυλάκι του έμαθε τη δύναμη της φιλίας, της ενσυναίσθησης και της αποδοχής. Μέσα από τις συζητήσεις τους, τα δύο πλάσματα αντάλλαξαν εμπειρίες, μαθαίνοντας να εκτιμούν τον κόσμο όπως τον είχαν γνωρίσει. Η ιστορία ανέδειξε την αξία της συνεργασίας, της διαφορετικότητας και της δύναμης να ξεπερνάμε τους φόβους μας για να αγκαλιάζουμε νέες εμπειρίες. Μια αλληγορική αφήγηση για μικρούς και μεγάλους, που ενθάρρυνε τους αναγνώστες να εκτιμήσουν τα μικρά «θαύματα» της ζωής και να καλλιεργήσουν τη σύνδεση με τους άλλους και με τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό.
Mε ένα ακούραστο πέπλο χαράς, τα παιδιά τύλιξαν την αφήγηση, η οποία ζωντάνεψε με έναν τρόπο μοναδικά απρόσμενο και μαγικό, καθώς η ιστορία αναπαραστάθηκε, και πήρε ζωή με έναν σχεδόν απόκοσμα συγκινητικό τρόπο μέσο ενός κογχυλιού και βότσαλου που η Γεωργία Κακούρου-Χρόνη κρατούσε στα ακροδάχτυλα της.
Τα παιδιά, με μεγάλη φαντασία και δημιουργικότητα, χρωμάτισαν τις εικονογραφήσεις προσθέτοντας στοιχεία αντανακλόντας το πώς βλέπουν τον εαυτό τους μέσα σε αυτό το τοπίο. Οι εικονογραφήσεις δημιούργησαν μια αίσθηση του ανήκειν, καθώς ενσωμάτωσαν τους μαθητές στο σκηνικό, επιτρέποντάς τους να εμπλουτίσουν την ήδη εικονογραφημένη ιστορία. Μέσα από αυτή τη διάδραση, τα παιδιά όχι μόνο εξερεύνησαν τη φαντασία τους, αλλά και ενίσχυσαν τη σύνδεσή τους με τον τόπο και την πολιτιστική τους ταυτότητα.

Με την αξιέπαινη συμβολή των εκπαιδευτικών του Νηπιαγωγείου και Δημοτικού σχολείου, οι μαθητές συμμετείχαν σε μια εκπαιδευτική δράση αναστοχασμού για τον τόπο τους και σε ένα διαδραστικό εργαστήριο ζωγραφικής του βιβλίου. THE TEΛΟΣ SOCIETY CHRISTMAS IN KASTELLORIZO with the author of Kastellorizo: Pebble-Shell, Georgia Kakourou-Chroni
Christmas is a time that highlights the values of giving, love, and solidarity, bringing people together and bridging distances. In this spirit, THE TEΛΟΣ SOCIETY was present where its heart beats strongest—in Kastellorizo, at the kindergarten and elementary school of the island, along with the author of the book, the creator behind a Kastellorizian story of friendship.
With great emotion and success, the presentation of the children's book Kastellorizo: Pebble-Shell by the author Georgia Kakourou-Chroni, former curator of the National Gallery, illustrated by Stefanos Koltsidopoulos and published by THE TEΛΟΣ SOCIETY, took place on Monday, December 16, 2024. The event was co-organized in collaboration with Stratos Amygdalos, the Cultural Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Megisti, with the active participation of the educators and students of the Kindergarten and Elementary School of Megisti, and the publisher Georgia Kotretsos.
The book was gifted to the children before the Christmas holidays, offering a keepsake that combines literature and art while simultaneously strengthening their connection to the cultural and natural heritage of their island.

The story Kastellorizo: Pebble-Shell by Georgia Kakourou-Chroni transported the children of the Kindergarten and Elementary School of Kastellorizo to a world filled with sea, sky, and the magic of nature, as seen through the eyes of a small pebble and a shell. The children interpreted and enriched the story through an imaginative navigation game, while they recognized within the pages of the book the breadth of their land, the friendships, and the wondrous world of the sea. On the shores of Kastellorizo, the pebble dreamed of adventures beyond the sea foam, while the shell taught it the power of friendship, empathy, and acceptance. Through their conversations, the two characters exchanged experiences, learning to appreciate the world as they knew it. The story highlighted the value of cooperation, diversity, and the strength to overcome fears and embrace new experiences. An allegorical tale for children and adults alike, it encouraged readers to appreciate life's small "miracles" and nurture connections with others and with themselves.
With an unflagging veil of joy, the children embraced the narrative, which came to life in an unexpectedly magical and deeply moving way through a shell and pebble that Georgia Kakourou-Chroni held at her fingertips.
The children, with great imagination and creativity, colored in the illustrations by adding elements that reflected how they see themselves within this landscape. The illustrations created a sense of belonging, as they incorporated the students into the setting, allowing them to enrich the already illustrated story. Through this interaction, the children not only explored their imagination but also strengthened their connection to their place and cultural identity.

I feel particularly moved and proud that the Municipality of Megisti participated for the first time in a children's book presentation of our island, Kastellorizo, as its central theme. With the commendable contribution of the educators from the Kindergarten and Primary School, the students participated in an educational reflection activity about their island and an interactive workshop coloring the book's illustrations. The author, Georgia Kakourou-Chroni, and the visual artist, Georgia Kotretsos, founder of THE TELOS SOCIETY, honored us greatly with their presence and initiative.
Στις 1, 2 και 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 2024 πραγματοποιήθηκε στον Έβρο η πολυθεματική δράση της ΤΗΕ ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY «ΑΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΗΤΟΣ ΧΡΟΝΟΣ» με την υποστήριξη του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού.
Μετά την επιτυχημένη συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Άρτου και Σίτου στη Λευκίμμη Έβρου, τον Δεκέμβριο του 2023, στο πλαίσιο του ερευνητικού προγράμματος «ΨΩΜΙ & ΚΑΡΒΟΥΝΟ» της αστικής μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρείας THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, Arts & Culture Research Lab Observatorium, το πρόγραμμα επιστρέφει με την πολυθεματική δράση «ΑΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΗΤΟΣ ΧΡΟΝΟΣ». Οι δραστηριότητες εκτείνονται από τη Λευκίμμη και τον Προβατώνα μέχρι το Διδυμότειχο, ενώ το ερευνητικό σκέλος του προγράμματος, που ξεκίνησε στο Δάσος της Δαδιάς, ολοκληρώνεται στο Ορμένιο και τα Πετρωτά Ορεστιάδας.

Λίγα λόγια για τις δράσεις
Εμπνευσμένο από τις θεωρίες των Λεύκιππου και Δημόκριτου, το πρόγραμμα εξερευνά την έννοια του άπειρου χρόνου. Σε τοποθεσίες όπου ο χρόνος φαίνεται άλλοτε άστατος και άλλοτε ακίνητος, καλούμαστε να αναζητήσουμε συνέργειες που θα επεκτείνουν την πολιτιστική δράση πέρα από τα αστικά κέντρα.
ΕΘΝΙΚΟ ΠΑΡΚΟ ΔΑΔΙΑΣ – Δευτέρα, 2 Σεπτεμβρίου, ώρα 18:00 – 19:30
Η περιβαλλοντική καταστροφή στο Εθνικό Πάρκο Δαδιάς – Λευκίμης – Σουφλίου είναι ανυπολόγιστη. Ο χρόνος για να ξαναγίνει το οικοσύστημα όπως ήταν υπολογίζεται σε 150 χρόνια. To Εθνικό Πάρκο Δάσους Δαδιάς – Λευκίμης – Σουφλίου είναι μια από τις σημαντικότερες προστατευόμενες περιοχές σε εθνικό, ευρωπαϊκό και διεθνές επίπεδο. Είναι μία από τις πρώτες περιοχές στην Ελλάδα που τέθηκαν σε καθεστώς προστασίας, λόγω του μεγάλου αριθμού σπάνιων ειδών αρπακτικών πουλιών. Η συνολική έκταση του είναι 428.000 στρέμματα (ΚΥΑ 35633/2066) από τα οποία τα 72.900 αποτελούν τις 2 ζώνες προστασίας της φύσης (ζώνες Α1 και Α2).
Η κορυφή Κάψαλο «Τσατάλ Καγιά», την οποία επισκεφθήκαμε αποτελεί την 2η υψηλότερη κορυφή εντός των ορίων του Εθνικού Πάρκου με υψόμετρο 604 μ., ενώ η υψηλότερη κορυφή είναι το ύψωμα «Αντά Τεπές» ή «Κορυφή» με υψόμετρο 654 μ.
Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, ακριβώς μετά τη καταστροφική φωτιά του 2023, βρεθήκαμε εκεί, αμήχανα δίχως να χωρά η λογική μας τις έννοιες της έκτασης ή του χρόνου.
ΔΗΜΟΣΙΕΥΣΕΙΣ
Το πολιτιστικό ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα 'ΨΩΜΙ & ΚΑΡΒΟΥΝΑ' της THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, εξερευνά εκτενώς τον παραδοσιακό τρόπο παρασκευής ψωμιού στην Ελλάδα, φέρνοντας στο φως τους τεχνίτες αρτοποιούς που αναβιώνουν την τέχνη της αρτοποιίας στην Ελλάδα και την παράδοσή της.
Το μικρό ακριτικό ελληνικό χωριό που ονομάζεται Βήσσανή, στα σύνορα με την Αλβανία, διατηρεί την παράδοση της ελληνικής αρτοποιίας για εκατοντάδες χρόνια, όπου κάθε σπίτι είχε το παρελθόν το δικό του φούρνο με ξύλα. Η οικονομική ύφεση των ελληνικών περιφερειών άφησε εμφανή σημάδια εγκατάλειψης στο χωριό, όπου οι κάτοικοι που έμειναν πίσω σήμερα καταναλώνουν κατεψυγμένο ψωμί.
Την Άνοιξη του 2024, στην πλατεία του χωριού, θα διοργανωθεί ένα ανοιχτό κάλεσμα, ένα συλλογικό γεγονός παρασκευής ψωμιού όπου οι ξυλόφουρνοι θα ενεργοποιηθούν ξανά. Αρτοποιοί από όλη την Ελλάδα θα παραβρεθούν και θα συμμετάσχουν. Θα χαρούμε πολύ να σας έχουμε εδώ μαζί μας, καθώς μόνιμοι κάτοικοι θα συμμετέχουν και θα χρησιμοποιήσουν σιτάρι από τοπικές ποικιλίες από τους κοντινούς πετρόμυλους.
Στόχος της ΤΤS είναι να εκδώσει ένα βιβλίο για την άυλη κληρονομιά του ψωμιού και της αρτοποιίας στην Ελλάδα - με άλλα λόγια, έναν ύμνο στο ψωμί ως αρχέτυπο γλυπτό στο ελληνικό γαστρονομικό ταξίδι που έχουμε ορίσει.
Το έργο υλοποιείται υπό την αιγίδα του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και τη μερική οικονομική υποστήριξη του, με αφορμή την εικοσαετία από την έγκριση της Σύμβασης για τη Διαφύλαξη της Άυλης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς (UNESCO 2003).
The project and research program of THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, Arts & Culture Research Lab Observatory is entitled "BREAD & CHARCOAL" 2023 - 24. The project will be realized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and will be partially financially supported by it too on the occasion of the twenty-year anniversary of the adoption of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO 2003).
The cultural project 'BREAD & CHARCOAL' delves into the rich tradition of breadmaking in Greece, spotlighting artisan bakers revitalizing this ancient art. The village of Vissani, situated on the border of Albania, stands as a testament to centuries-old Greek breadmaking. Each household maintains outdoor firewood ovens, preserving this culinary heritage. Despite economic challenges in Greek peripheries, Vissani's elders are grappling with neglect. In Spring 2024, a grand collective breadmaking event is planned in the village square, rekindling the use of wood-fired ovens. Bakers from across Greece are invited to participate, utilizing local wheat varieties.
THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY, aspires to publish a book celebrating the intangible heritage of bread and baking in Greece, an ode to bread as a symbolic sculptural element in Greek dining.

On this occasion TTS is happy to present the research of the group A.P.Pir.A. entitled "From Archaeology of Piracy to Pirate Archaeology: Piracy in the Greek Seas from Prehistoric to Roman Times” hosted by Department of History and Archaeology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and funded by Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation in collaboration with Museum of Cycladic Art between 1.1.2021-31.12.2023.

The A.P.Pir.A. research project is a manifestation of a pioneering idea concerning the approach and study of piracy in antiquity. The object of this project, hosted by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, is the archaeological investigation of piracy in the Greek seas from the Final Neolithic (c. 4500-3200 BCE) to the end of the Roman period (330 CE). The acronym “A.P.Pir.A.” summarizes the methodology and objectives of the project in the phrase “from Archaeology of Piracy to Pirate Archaeology”. The term archaeology of piracy is borrowed by Thucydide’s Archaeology (1.2-19), i.e., the first chapters of the work of the great historian, as the project intends to transcribe accordingly the first chapters of piracy, in order to create a completely new subfield of archaeological research, named pirate archaeology.
The first step was the thorough study of all kinds of ancient written sources (e.g., historical texts, speeches, epics, novels, and inscriptions) as well as several features of piracy in the Greek seas during the early modern times, in order to understand the nature of ancient piracy. This study led in turn to the recognition of diachronic characteristics of piracy and the identification of the archaeological signature of the phenomenon. This has made it possible to detect many cases of archaeological sites and finds belonging to the periods under consideration and probably linked in some way to piracy. The A.P.Pir.A. project completely overturned the established research approach to piracy, as it was the first systematic archaeological investigation of the phenomenon, thoroughly examining piracy in the Greek seas over five millennia and seeking not only the victims but the pirates themselves.
Following the above studies, the team of the A.P.Pir.A. project organized, under the auspices of the Department of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the international hybrid conference “The Archaeology of Piracy in Antiquity”, which took place on October 5 and 6, 2023, at the “Ioannis Drakopoulos” Amphitheater of the Main Building (Propylaea) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In addition to the presentation of the research results of the project, the conference offered the opportunity to open the discussion on the archaeology of piracy to the wider scientific community. Moreover, through its social media pages, the A.P.Pir.A. project attempts to disseminate its research results to society and at the same time to develop certain concerns related to the phenomenon of piracy. Finally, the Department of Educational Programs of the Museum of Cycladic Art, which participates in the project as a collaborating organization, has designed an educational program on ancient piracy for children from 8 to 11 and from 12 to 14 years old. Aim of this program, which will start to be implemented from the beginning of 2024, is to offer to the children knowledge of ancient piracy in a pleasant way and to contribute to their training to examine and possibly to the overturning of fixed ideas.

Χαρτογράφηση της Δημιουργικής Βιομηχανίας στον Μετασχηματισμό της Νέας Αθήνας
Έχοντας ως σημείο εκκίνησης την νέα τροχιά στην οποία μπήκε η ελληνική καλλιτεχνική σκηνή τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες ο Παπαχρήστος στην τρέχουσα έρευνα του για τους ανεξάρτητους χώρους τέχνης, στρέφει το ενδιαφέρον του στις νέες φόρμες που παίρνει ο θεσμός. Αναλύοντας αυτούς τους σχηματισμούς δημιουργεί ένα σύνολο νοητικών χαρτογραφήσεων με σκοπό την ανάδειξη των μηχανισμών που συντελούν στην όλο και αυξανόμενη επιρροή της δημιουργικής βιομηχανίας στον μετασχηματισμό της νέας Αθήνας.
Μέσα στην πανοραμική εικόνα της εικαστικής σκηνής της Ελληνικής Πρωτεύουσας ξεχωρίζει η άνθιση των ανεξάρτητων καλλιτεχνικών πρωτοβουλιών (Artist run spaces) καθώς και οι σχέσεις που αναπτύσσουν με όλα τα κοινωνικά στρώματα. Η δράση των εναλλακτικών αυτών χώρων και η κριτική στάση που αναπτύσσουν, απέναντι στις διαδικασίες παραγωγής ανισοτήτων λόγω της τουριστικοποίησης των Αθηναϊκών γειτονιών, αλλά και η περιγραφή των τρόπων με τους οποίους η κοινότητα εμπλέκεται ενεργά σε καλλιτεχνικές δομές παραγωγής και παρουσίασης σύγχρονης τέχνης αποτελούν τα κυριότερα ευρήματα της έρευνας. Σε αυτή τη νέα πραγματικότητα ένα φρέσκο απόσταγμα καλλιτεχνικής δράσης και κοινωνικής εργασίας παράγεται στην Ελληνική πρωτεύουσα με την μορφή κοινωνικών γλυπτών.

By having as a starting point the new orbit that the Greek art scene has entered in recent decades, Papachristos in his current research on independent art spaces, turns his interest to the institution of art and its new formations. Analyzing these schemas, he creates a set of mental mappings aiming to highlight the mechanisms that contribute to the ever-increasing influence of the creative industry in the transformation of the ‘’new’’ Athens.
Within the panoramic picture of the Greek capital’ s art scene, the blooming of independent artistic initiatives (Artist-run spaces) stands out, as well as their evolving relationships with all social strata. The general programs of these alternative spaces and their critical stand, towards the processes of touristification- a basic factor for producing inequalities in Athenian social fabric, as well as the description of the ways in which the community is actively involved in artistic structures of production and presentation of contemporary art in the neighborhoods of the city, are among the main findings of the research. Into this new reality an amalgamation of artistic practice and social work it has been emerged with the form of social sculptures.

Ο Δημήτρης Παπαχρήστος είναι εικαστικός, που χρησιμοποιεί την επιστημονική και κοινωνική έρευνα ως καλλιτεχνική πρακτική και αντίστροφα. Γεννήθηκε στην περιοχή των Μεσογείων Αττικής το 1989, σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην ΑΣΚΤ Αθηνών και Ανθρωπογεωγραφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου. Από το 2014 ζει στο Ναύπλιο Αργολίδας όπου και εργάζεται. Η τρέχουσα πραγματικότητα και οι κοινωνικές αλλαγές που συντελούνται κατά βάση στο δομημένο περιβάλλον- καθώς αυτό αποτελεί την βάση του καλλιτεχνικού συστήματος, αποτελούν πηγή υλικού και ιδεών για το έργο του. Από το 2021 είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος του χώρου τέχνης Poeme design and fine arts στο Ναύπλιο. Μερικοί από τους φορείς με τους οποίους έχει συνεργαστεί είναι το Fougaro Art Center, ο Atopos CVC, το Πολεμικό μουσείο Ναυπλίου, το Πανεπιστήμιο Πελοποννήσου και η ΑΣΚΤ Αθηνών.
Dimitris Papachristos is an artist who uses scientific and social research as an artistic practice and vice versa. He was born in the area of Mesogeia, Attica in 1989, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Athens and Human Geography at the University of the Aegean. Since 2014 he lives in the region of Argolida where he works. Daily reality and social changes that take place in the built environment - as this can be considered the basis of the artistic system, are a source of inspiration for his art. Since 2021 he is a founding member of the art space Poeme design and fine arts in Nafplio. Some of the organizations he has collaborated with are the Fougaro Art Center, Atopos CVC, the War Museum of Nafplio, the University of Peloponnese and the Athens School of fine arts.
Έναυσμα της πολιτιστικής δράσης Ισμαήλ Project είναι ο ίδιος ο οικισμός. Όπως μας πληροφόρησε ο Πρόεδρος του Πνευματικού Κέντρου Πανόρμου Γιαννούλης Χαλεπάς, το Ισμαήλ ιδρύθηκε από κάποιον ονόματι Μαΐλη. Μεταξύ του 17ου – 19ου αιώνα οι κάτοικοι χρησιμοποιούσαν το γράμμα «σ» μπροστά από επίθετα και τοπωνύμια, μετατρέποντας το σε «Σ’Μαΐλη». Αρμόδιος για την καταγραφή της ιστορίας του Ισμαήλ είναι ο ερευνητής και λαογράφος, Κώστας Δανούσης ο οποίος συμπλήρωσε λέγοντας μας πως το χωριό είναι πολύ προγενέστερο των πλησιέστερων χωριών, Μαμάδου και Μαρλά, καθώς χτίστηκε στο δεύτερο μισό του 17ου αιώνα.
Το Ισμαήλ λοιπόν σήμερα είναι ένας ερειπωμένος οικισμός, ένας «εγκαταλελειμμένος οικισμός». Βρίσκεται στην Βορειοδυτική πλευρά της Τήνου, στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Έξω Μεριάς. Τα τρία χωριά και το κεφαλοχώρι της Έξω Μεριάς, ο Πύργος, συνδέονται μέσω ενός περίτεχνου και άλλοτε λιθόστρωτου πεζοπορικού δικτύου. Ο οικισμός είναι επίσης προσβάσιμος μέσω του οδικού δικτύου, ακριβώς στην παράκαμψη του αγροτικού δρόμου που οδηγεί στο Στενό Τήνου – Άνδρου. Βασικές ασχολίες των κατοίκων ήταν η γεωργία και η κτηνοτροφία, ενώ αργότερα κύρια επαγγελματική ενασχόλησή τους ήταν η εξόρυξη μαρμάρου ως και το Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Το Ισμαήλ παρήκμασε σταδιακά μέχρι τη δεκαετία του ΄50 όπου το εγκατέλειψε και ο τελευταίος του κάτοικος.
Σε αυτό το απόκοσμο τοπίο μιας ανεκτίμητης αρχιτεκτονικής αισθητικής και αρμονίας με τον τόπο τέσσερις εικαστικοί: η Ειρήνη Βλαβιανού, η Λυδία Δεληκούρα, ο Γιώργος Μαραζιώτης, και ο Αλέξανδρος Ροκαδάκης προσκλήθηκαν να συμμετάσχουν στην πολιτιστική δράση Ισμαήλ Project δημιουργώντας εφήμερες in-situ γλυπτικές εγκαταστάσεις. Τα εικαστικά έργα/χειρονομίες τα οποία προκύπτουν από μια τέτοια διαδικασία και μέθοδο έχουν σαν εναρκτήριο ερέθισμα τον ίδιο τον τόπο. Μέσω αυτής της πρακτικής διευρύνουν τη σχέση τους με την τοπογραφία και την ιστορική σημασία της περιοχής. Το Ισμαήλ ζωντανεύει μετά από 70 χρόνια και κατευθύνει έργα τα οποία ενσωματώνονται προσωρινά σε αυτό.
Μέλημα της ομάδας ήταν να επιτευχθεί μια δημιουργική αλληλεπίδραση με την ιστορικότητα του εγκαταλελειμμένου οικισμού, και την πολιτιστική κληρονομιά της ευρύτερης περιοχής.
Η πρακτική των εικαστικών χαρακτηρίζεται από ποικίλα μέσα και υλικά, ωστόσο η επιλογή τους έγινε με κριτήριο την επιθυμία τους να δημιουργήσουν in-situ εφήμερα έργα στο Ισμαήλ. Η συνειδητή επιλογή των επιτόπιων εγκαταστάσεων έδωσε την ευκαιρία σε νέους καλλιτέχνες να πειραματιστούν με εγχειρήματα που εκτυλίσσονται οργανικά σε πραγματικό χώρο και χρόνο. Μέρος της εργασίας τους επίσης αφορούσε την ενεργοποίηση των κατοίκων της περιοχής και των τοπικών φορέων, καθώς και την αξιοποίηση των πολιτιστικών χώρων και του ίδιου του εγκαταλελειμμένου οικισμού.
Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, όπου ο χρόνος φαίνεται να έχει σταματήσει, τίποτα δεν κινείται, δεν ανταποκρίνεται. Η Ειρήνη Βλαβιανού με ένα τσουβάλι μαλλιά από κουρεμένα πρόβατα έπλεξε ιστούς που ανάρτησε στο αλώνι του Γιαννούλη Χαλέπα, η Δεληκούρα με ένα σακί πηλό και περιττώματα κατσικιών, τοποθετείται ως προς την πιθανή μελλοντική ανάπτυξη του Ισμαήλ, μέσω μίας διαδικασίας που ακουμπά έμπρακτα στην παράδοση του εργόχειρου, ο Μαραζιώτης συνομιλώντας με νέους δημιουργούς της σχολής μαρμαροτεχνίας του Πύργου αφουγκράστηκε τον απόηχο της εγκατάλειψης και ήρθε να συμπληρώσει στην ηχώ διακεκομμένων ιδεών ένα φοίνικα από νέον, ένα κομμάτι πλάκας, μια γύψινη κολώνα, και έναν ημιτελή κίονα, τέλος ο Ροκαδάκης με φύλλα λαμαρίνας σχημάτισε τα μονοπάτια και την πορεία της εγκατάλειψης του χωριού, αντανακλώντας το γυμνό πεδίο και θέτοντας ερωτήματα σχετικά με το τοπίο, τον χώρο, τον χρόνο, - ‘είσαι εδώ με ακούς, με βλέπεις, με αισθάνεσαι;’
Οι εφήμερες in-situ παρεμβάσεις των εικαστικών είναι μια ξαφνική θετική έκρηξη σε έναν ποιητικά καταθλιπτικό τόπο που παλεύει μόνος του την ίδια του την εγκατάλειψη. Είναι ενθαρρυντικό να γνωρίζουμε πως στις 05/13-03-2021 το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο Τήνου κήρυξε το Ισμαήλ διατηρητέο οικισμό ως τη γενέτειρα του Γιαννούλη Χαλεπά.
Πολιτιστικά τελικά αντιλαμβάνεται κανείς ότι δεν μπορεί να μένει άπραγος σε έναν κόσμο που δεν ξυπνά, δεν βλέπει, δεν κάνει κάτι, δεν ζητά βοήθεια, και όπου τελικά πεθαίνει.

Qui précède l’autre, l’art ou l’artiste ? Autrement dit: Est-ce l'œuvre qui fait l’artiste ou l’artiste qui fait l'œuvre? Ce projet d’exposition présente des objets, textes, situations, trouvé.e.s, collecté.e.s, dont les auteur.e.s et créateur.e.s sont anonymes. Les objets sont proposés par les commissaires membres de la Délégation artistique et par les artistes qui dialoguent régulièrement avec L’appartement 22. Le geste artistique pourrait peut-être être dans la coïncidence de la rencontre. L’expression peut se formuler par tous, n’importe où, à tout moment -ou bien à un moment donné- même le temps d’une vision. Anonyme.s est une exposition-programme qui rassemble les œuvres et réalisations de créateurs anonymes, des poètes et auteurs qui travaillent dans un esprit coopératif avec d’autres créateurs ou avec diverses communautés. Ce chantier-programme est conçu en plusieurs étapes qui se chevauchent, mêlant rencontres, exposition et publications. Dans chaque chapitre il est question de choix, de libertés individuelles et de dialogues tout en proposant une réflexion sur les formes possibles de l'œuvre d’art dans les lieux inattendus. Ο ανάδοχος δημιουργός είναι διαδοχικά ο οδηγός μιας νέας συνθήκης που μας καθιστά μάρτυρες εννοιολογικών ευρημάτων. Συνάμα θεατής και θεωρός - αυτός ο αγγελιοφόρος που ανασύρει μηνύματα άλλοτε κρυμμένα κάτω από τη σκόνη, ξεθωριασμένα από τον ήλιο, και παραδομένα στη καταγραφή του χρόνου τους. Καλούμαστε να οξύνουμε τις αισθήσεις μας και να αφεθούμε στην πρακτική του ‘κρυφτό’ - (ξ)ελευθερώνοντας ερμηνείες ανεπιτήδευτων εικόνων, συνθέσεων και στιγμιαίων εκφάνσεων ποιητικότητας, ξαποσταίνοντας το βλέμμα μας σε κάτι ουσιαστικά ανοικείο, αλλά φαινομενικά δικό μας.
